Matthew 26:63 But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest said to him, “I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” 64 Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
Daniel 7:13 “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him.
Consider:
Son of Man. This is Jesus favorite designation for himself. If this is Jesus favorite title for himself, perhaps it is important for us to understand it. Sometimes it is wrongly assumed that “Son of Man” is in contrast to “Son of God,” one denoting Jesus’ humanity while the other marks his divinity. In truth, acquaintance with the Old Testament reveals that the title Son of Man loudly proclaims that Jesus is very God of very God. Being God himself, Jesus has all dominion, all the nations will submit to him, and he is due all glory and honor (Dan. 7:14). When Jesus called himself Son of Man, the Jews—familiar with the Old Testament—knew exactly what he was referring to and were ready to kill him for it. Jesus’ claim seemed audacious and blasphemous to them, but it’s only blasphemous if it’s not true. The empty tomb stands as evidence that Jesus’ claim to be the Son of Man was far from audacious. It is fact.
Point to Ponder and for Prayer:
The Son of Man was a messianic title. Daniel’s reference to the future messiah included the promise that the Messiah’s kingdom would have no end. The only way the messiah’s kingdom could be endless would be if death were powerless. Jesus took away death’s sting when he arose on Easter morning (1 Cor. 15:55). The resurrection changes everything.
