Matthew 26:53 Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? 54 But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?”
2 Kings 6:17 Then Elisha prayed and said, “O LORD, please open his eyes that he may see.” So the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
Consider:
Elisha saw what neither his servant nor the great Syrian army could: namely, that God was ready to use his own angelic army to protect his people in Dothan. When the Syrian army advanced, Elisha prayed, and the enemy army was struck blind. Elisha then showed kindness to these prisoners of war, and due to God’s act of power and Elisha’s kindness, 2 Kings 6:18-23 says that the “Syrians did not come again on raids into the land of Israel.”
Jesus confronted a similar situation on the way to the cross. The Son of God had the power to call down a holy army of angels to fight successfully on his behalf. It would have been a righteous choice. However, the Father’s plan was to give his only Son for the world, not to condemn the world but to save the world through him (John 3:17). It was God kind plan for Jesus to proclaim good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty for the captives, and to give sight to blind as a merciful Messiah (Luke 4:18).
Point to Ponder and for Prayer
Jesus is the light of the world who mercifully uses his power and authority not to serve himself, but to serve and save his people from our sins, causing us to see the truth about our sin and his glory. Hanging crucified on a bloody cross, Jesus’ merciful and sacrificial authority was most gloriously displayed.
