Matthew 27:38 Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left.

Isaiah 53:12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.

Consider:

Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah would be “numbered with the transgressors.” The picture of God’s sinless Son hanging on a Roman cross between two common criminals provides a powerful illustration of the depths of God’s love for sinners. However, as we look up to the cross and take in the scene, we must focus on another aspect of Isaiah’s prophecy. He is not only being numbered with transgressors; he is bearing their sin, making full atonement. We are the common criminals who deserve to bear God’s judgment. We are the guilty offenders of the law—God’s Law. But our Savior died in our place. The wrath he bore was not his own. His death and intercession mean we will never have to face what we deserve. Will you look to him for forgiveness?

Point to Ponder and for Prayer:

It is not enough to acknowledge intellectually that Christ died for sinners. We must depend on what Christ did for us, realizing that without his sacrificial death, we are hopeless. Pray to God, acknowledging your need of Christ and expressing your trust in him alone.
